My friend's Arabic teacher, a Syrian, is bemused that
we Malaysians celebrate Nuzul Quran on 17th Ramadhan. He says, Allah has said
clearly in Surah al Qadr that al
Quran was sent down in the night of Al
-Qadr. Here's the translation of the surah:
97. Surah Al-Qadr (The
Night of Decree)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
3. The night of Al-Qadr (Decree)
is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is
better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).
4. Therein descend the angels and
the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] by Allah's Permission with all
Decrees,
5. Peace! (All that night, there is Peace and Goodness
from Allah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn.
So, when is the night of Al-Qadr? In Sahih Bukhari, narrated Ibn ‘Umar: Some men amongst the companions of the
Prophet were shown in their dreams that the night of Qadr was in the last seven nights of Ramadan. Allah's Apostle said,
"It seems that all your dreams agree that (the Night of Qadr) is in the last seven nights, and
whoever wants to search for it (i.e. the Night of Qadr) should search in the last seven (nights of Ramadan)."
In another hadith narrated by 'Aishah, Allah's Apostle said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan."
So, how come Malaysians come to choose 17th Ramadhan as the date to celebrate the decree of al Quran? Another Arabic teacher, a Malaysian, answered that it was based on a weak hadith. Hmm. Hopefully the authorities will fix this error.
Whatever the case may be, lets all observe the remaining days of this Ramadhan to the best of our ability, inshaAllah.
